After seeing this story I immediately went out and checked my tires (My other cars, of course! ). It is also a concern for those of you with older vehicles that have oldTires.

Thanks for the info. I did exactly what you did, check the tires on my car. As soon as the wifey comes home, I will check the tires on her SUV. That is real scarry. Here we are thinking we have a dependable tires on our cars. I do a lot of driving and mostly hiways. I ussually replace my tires in 2 to 3 years depanding on the thread life or when they start getting loud. I am concern about my wifey's SUV since she drive only a short distance to work, her tires usually get replace every 4 to 5 years.

While there may be a real problem with old tires it is difficult for me to take that story as anything more than sensationalistic fluff from 20/20. There is no data given other than how to read the date of manufacture on a tire. How many of these accidents happen each year? What scientific evidence is there that shows the correlation between age and probability of tread separation of the tread. Displaying images of retreaded truck tire remains on the side of the highway is suggestive at best and proves nothing.
The horrific images of kids shoes and soccer balls inside SUVs and Mini Vans mangled with crushed roofs appeals to emotions. However this also begs the question about car safety in the US where it appears that vehicle passenger compartments collapse endangering the occupants. I?ve seen Z3?s do better in roll over accidents than some of those images of SUVs and minivans.
We also don?t know how many of those tires were underinflated. Under inflated tires have been shown to heat up more and increasing the risk of tire failure.
Ultimately, our tires are what we depend on for keeping us safe. Most people make sure their brakes are in working order and buy cars based on their safety rating. However, when it comes to tires, most people shop based solely on price and tread life expectancy and never check the tire pressure on a regular basis.
That said, I'm now going to pay more attention to when the tire is made when shopping for tires.
