As people who follow the home theater threads know, I have been espousing the benefits of a new technology called WHDI. It is looking like the industry giants are rallying behind it! This is awesome news.

Yeah, very cool. Imagine - you can have that nice 20" LCD in the bathroom over the sink and all you need to wire is the power! Or the projector in the ceiling... it would only need power as well. Wall hanging a plasma or LCD would be easier as well. No more stringing cables between the display and the shelf holding the electronics.

I'll be waiting to upgrade my receiver until this kind of technology is built into receivers.

Surely this will be a huge leap forward in terms of convenience and ease of installation.

As far as receivers, since I just recently took the plunge and just bought a new one, I imagine (hope) that there will be some sort of external device available that I could connect to my receiver to convert the signal to wireless...

Yes. Belkin may be first to market with the "Flywire". It permits normal components to use the spec with little adapters, etc... It's pricey for the time being, about $1000. I expect this could take 2-3 years before we see it in mainstream components.

Call me the skeptic. But I think we're 5-8 years away for this to be ready for prime time and that may be optimistic. Unless there is one standard the adoption rate will be low. UWB has also promised this for a long time but that's another issue. But in the mean time, I'll sit and watch and eagerly wait for the feature.
