Being the son of a Chrysler dealer, I drove whatever my father gave me (under dealer plates). But the first car he bought specifically for me was a Triumph TR-3, which he promptly sold while I was off at school. To make amends, in my sophomore year in college, he bought (and registered) a Jaguar XK-E, FHC for me.

But the first car I bought for myself, after school, was a year old 71 2002 that had just been brought back from Germany by a fellow soldier, whose pregnant wife refused to learn to shift.

Since then, the string of allegiance to BMW was broken only once, by a new 84 MB 190e with stick; ditched that for a new 87 535iS 5 speed.

Cheers,
Ray Hull

I hate to reply by replicating this long email, but E60VTA - this is such an amazing list of cars. You win. Of all these vehicles, which one do you most wish you still had in your garage?

1972 Morris Marina which died a gloriously tragic death. Car starts to develop what I thought was a wheel bearing rub so I had it booked in to the garage to get the work done. Driving home the night before the work was supposed to be done, and a couple of miles from home the rub gets worse. Rub suddenly becomes a horrific metallic rattle, and with an almighty thud one side of the back of car drops and hits the deck - I'm grinding down the road on three wheels. Next thing I see is my rear wheel roll down the road ahead of me, heading right into an endless stream of oncoming traffic. Amazingly, the wheel tracks straight as an arrow, following right down the center road markings and misses all the oncoming cars, and when it decides to do the decent thing and head off to the side of the road it manages to go straight between two cars and manages to miss both of them. Meanwhile, I'm furiously stomping on the brakes which of course only has the effect of p!ssing all my brake fluid onto the road so the only thing that's going to slow me down is friction - evidenced by the trail of smoke and sparks following me down the road. I manage to pulll over onto the verge and call the garage. They tell me to leave the car there, and they will come out and tow it in the morning. Well, it so happens that the verge was right by a local pub, and that night, after closing time, a suitably "refreshed" patron takes a brick or hammer to the windshield and trashes it. Amazingly, the wheel could have been repaired, the damage to the windshield frame could not, and I had to scrap the car for which I received the princely sum of 20 of our Great British Pounds......

Bloody eh, your story had me rolling on the floor. I remembered when I was a wee lad that my dad had a 1970 something Morris Oxford. Ugliest thing I ever did see. Somewhere down the road he ended up with an Astin Martin DB5?, quite the opposite of the Morris.

The 1968 Jaguar XKE hands down. It was a pain to keep tuned, but with the Abarth exhaust I installed, retrofitted 3 SU carbs, and 72-spoke chrome wire wheels it was an awesome car to drive, look at and listen to. Brand new this car cost about $6,600 (1968 dollars). I bought it from a Jaguar dealer when it was 18 months old with 18,000 miles on it for $3,400.

Let me think a second.

1-1956 Pontiac w/421 2+2 1959 Bonniville engine I got from a junk yard and put in
2-1960 Chevy Convertible 6 cyclinder
3-1968 Plymouth Road Runner with 426 Hemi
4-1970 Dodge R/T 440 Magnun Engine
5-1972 Pontiac Astre That car really sucked
6-1976 Buck Regal That also sucked big time
7-1982 Toyota Corolla
8-1987 Toyota Cressida
9-1994 Jeep Cherokee
10-1997 Jeep Cherokee
11-2003 BMW 325 xi
12-2005 BMW 525i

Numbers 3 & 4 I should have kept. I was young and stupid for selling them off.
