I took my test in the spring of 1977 in a 1971 Arctic Blue Mercury Comet 4 door sedan. 302 cubic inch (5.0 liter) V-8 with such extravagant options as A/C and a locking console with clock on the transmission hump.
The car was a gift from my Godfather. I power-blocked the car at nearly every stop sign in town and burned off the snow tires in less than a month. It kissed a few guard rails when I took a 90 degree left turn a little late (and it cost me a whole summer of driving restrictions from my parents) Since I had plenty of time, I searched salvage yards high and low for replacement front fenders. I purchased a new grille, bolted on the fenders, used container or 2 of bondo, and followed by a trip to Maaco for the $99 paint special and she was good to go.
I ended up selling her for $600.00 in late '77 and replaced her with a 74 Monte Carlo that had only 3,200 miles on her at the time of purchase.

Mel, your car buying pattern seems like mine. I was so horrified by my 1981 Chevy Caprice that my next car was....a 1990 Mustang LX 5.0 (the GT engine, suspension and tires in a sleeper, plain Jane body).
I still have fond memories of the LX 5.0.

Mine was a 1982 Camaro Z28...... Maroon with silver trim along the bottom...... Went through 2 transmissions and a lot of tires.. Drank beer and listened to Heavy Metal constantly!
Ahhhh, the memories.......
Pretty much the same now only I have a BMW.

Mine was a 60 something Dodge Dart. Dirt brown. Pushbutton transmission. I tried to find some pictures but none of them looked like my car. Not ugly enough...

Mine was a red 1977 VW Rabbit with a great view of the road through the floorboards, Flintstones style.

I'm going to be in LA from Sunday-Wednesday on business. I always love visiting the City of Angels.
