Not derogatory by any means, it's the way there were trained. Slice and dice so that they specialize in one area or another. Not enough gray hair to have seen it all and be a real "systems" engineer. The really experienced systems folks have retired. There are very few in the middle with significant experience hands on as many went away during lean years or could only grow into management.

Not meant to belittle young bucks, after all we all had to be "young bucks or buckettes at some point

You're very right... Boeing is having that problem right now... not enough "younger" or middle aged people to take over once the older ones retire... the average age at my site is ummm 57 believe it or not! They're trying to play catch up. Its going to be tough! Things are learned through experience not school... school gets you the basics and then the rest is on your own... *I think...*

"Slice and dice" that's very well put! I have always been "broom for every use" and have seen that development too: Specialist company which have focused in special area of expertise and have lot of special experts as employes!

Have these specialists "one track mind"?

same in my space (enterprise software) - i'm 36, and i'm supposed to cover mainframe technology. i'm struggling, as the more senior folks in my group are amused by my bewilderment with z/OS and JCL.

Managing Director of a company designing and manufacturing specialised fastening systems, like the 600+ self-piercing rivets used to stitch the aluminium front end of each E6x series together.
