And you thought that removing the floor mats was simply for weight reduction...

"NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Lexus and Toyota advised drivers of 3.8
million of its cars to remove floor mats or risk a forced-down accelerator
pedal that could lead to a fatal crash.

In statements released Tuesday, the world's largest automaker and the
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration warned drivers that the
removable mats could interfere with the pedal and cause it to stick.

It's time we got a petition passed around to outlaw the killer floor mat!! Not only unintended acceleration, but the huge savings in fuel costs alone should be reason to outlaw them....besides, the performance advantage of a car AFTER removal of floor mats is STAGGERING!!

On a chrysler I once got my floor mat stuck in the steering column

Personally I think we should remove all car mats, rip out the carpet and put in some nice cork flooring. It's lightweight, has sound deadening properties and is easy to clean

..then again maybe not!

They just showed a 911 call here on German TV of some American guy calling and saying that their (toyota) gas pedal is stuck down and they were doing 120mph and coming to the end of the freeway and didn't know what to do. It's implied in the way that the call ends that they crashed. How the driver didn't have the intelligence to put it into neutral, try changing down the gears, or just put the hand-brake (parking/emergency brake) on or just use the regular brakes I can't imagine. Soooooo many options and instead of taking any of them the dude just called 911. Weird.
