I don't know how much you guys follow this sort of thing, but Texas Instruments has expanded the scope of industries and verticals that will implement its Da Vinci technology. The latest announcement came this week at PMA, the main US photographic show.

I can't tell if TI's efforts are tied at all to Da Vinci Systems, the maker of several suites of post-production equipment and software for the motion picture industry. Regardless, it would appear that TI is rolling quite a bit of multimedia functionality onto a chip for video cameras, still cameras, and.... drum roll.... automotive infotainment systems.

I'm guessing that we'll soon see these devices in future cars since a single chip can provide:

H.264 decode/encode
MPEG4 decode/encode
H.263 decode/encode
WMV9 decode/encode
MPEG2 decode/encode
JPEG decode/encode
AAC+ decode/encode
AAC decode/encode
WMA9 decode/encode
WMA8 decode/encode
MP3 decode

Interesting stuff. I'm kinda looking forward to getting a P&S camera that can also capture HD video. That should be awesome.

very right - did your homework, they are indeed audio codecs particularly using for video conferencing phones.

As for the video codecs, i could tell you stories that can last a day and night. Video Codecs particularly high definition as well as being multi standard and encode is compared to cars trying to get the 500 bhp you need for a m5 from a 4 cylinder diesel. Our company here is specialised in video codecs in high definition on a programmable platform and i know what it takes to get these standards all on one chip. it will still be years before the market and our competition and ourselves have product that can do HD h264 encode on a programmable platform as TI has suggested...

btw, i never ever thought i would be talking about something related tomy business here on this forum - wow...
