As of the first of the year, Illinois has banned texting while driving. Personally, I think it's a good law. I also am a habitual offender. It's going to be hard to keep the iphone upside down on my idrive "shelf" until I get to my destination. Bluetooth will help, but the insatiable desire to check e-mail or fire off a txt is going to be hard to fight. I think we owe it to ourselves, our families, and other drivers to do it though. It's really a dangerous habit. According to this CNN article, the government is looking at a federal ban as well. Be safe driving...

I think it's a great law, too many people do everything BUT drive while driving - and they are competent at NONE of them. I keep my phone in my pocket for that reason, if I get a call I have my BT headset on and can answer just fine.

Another freedom lost I say. It's all Obama's fault. First those pesky seatbelts, now this? What's next, a ban on foglights when it isn't foggy?

I can write that law...

this is one of those laws that wont stop anyone from texting while driving. they will just be more cautious IMO. I am actually a big "text at a red light" person, not so much while driving, although I am reluctant to report that I have.
I also drive with my foglights on when it isn't foggy

The one thing everyone should be aware of is:
If you are involved in an accident your insurance will not pay for the damages. Or they will get the money back from you. And even if you are not guilty you will become at least 50% guilty once they find out you were texting while driviong, or on the phone while driving. And finding out is easy for them, unfortunately.
Here in Geremany we have such laws allready and the insurances make people pay whenever they can. So the fine you might get from the cops is not the problem...
