Don't mean to be flip here but can someone explain "Christlike approach to competition" from this quote by the head of the school that won and fired this man?

"This clearly does not reflect a Christlike and honorable approach to competition,"

I'm not sure. My interpretation was that the winning team showed no mercy and intentionally ran up the score, all the while teasing the other girls. They were doing alley-oops, three-pointers, etc. while the crowd and coach egged them on chanting "one hundred, one hundred." The losing team had eight total players and several were developmentally disabled. I think it was less about it being a great win, and more about the taunting and poor sportsmanship on display. Then again, that's just what heard on CNN or read. So...?

If that's the case, it's pretty cold. They don't even do that in major league sports (well, usually). I mean, I've seen several football games (college and NFL) this season alone where the winning team ran draw plays and punted when it was clear they were going to win.

+1 children raised under that mentality expect the same when they grow up and get a job. Competition brings money. You cant expect a raise for "trying"
Really? Are you kidding me? Do you know nothing of Organizational Behavior? Win that sales competition then act like a show-off a$$hole and see how well you do in the long run. Competition can be healthy for individuals and organizations, but not if the "winner" goes around rubbing it in everyone else's face. Remember, you'll have to come back and work on other projects with the same people you just taunted.

It's called character and dignity, win or lose.

I never said one should rub it in anyone's face that he/she won. I simply stated that getting a medal for trying does not transfer into adult life.
Rubbing anything in anyone's face is just a d*ck move. (except when you and BMW just beat another car)

winning and losing are both life lessons, things are not always fair or pretty and nice, its nice to prepare kids for everything they encounter in life, they should be taught to take this humiliation to work harder and put up a more respectable game next time. to get shut out in basketball is really difficult i mean you have to try really hard to do that. And if the kids are physically challenged they shouldnt be in the same league!!!!! Getting fired for winning seems odd to me!

How about playing defense or scoring a single point? Are you kiddin me? What if this this coach was teaching your kid math? Is it ok to get every answer wrong?

My observations weren't about babying the team that lost, or their coach. The "winning" coach who was fired was pushing his kids to run up the score and humiliate the losing team. It's about sportsmanship. It's great to win, but you don't have demean the other team in the process. I wouldn't want an a-hole like that around my kid, and apparently the school agreed, so they fired his sorry ass.

Bobby Knight may be the biggest "A-hole" in the history of college basketball, but he also turned more "nobodies" into "somebodies" than most coaches in CBB history. Parents continually sent their kids to play for him. Guess it depends on what your goal is... to be fair and underperform.... or be arrogant and succeed? I guess there may be a middle ground, but few are capable of achieving this.

The Bobby Knight reference is unexpected, but he was a fierce competitor for sure. He had some flare-ups on the court, but most were concerned with his coaching tactics toward his own players. I have no opinion on that whatsoever. However, I challenge anyone to find an example of any great coach (Bobby Knight included) who encouraged and joined his players in the taunting, jeering, and running up the score on a team that was obviously outclassed. You can win/be successful without being arrogant about it. That was my only point.
