The big danger with these kinds of sunglasses is if they aren't UV blocking. Ask any eye doctor - you're killing your eyes. The tint will make your pupils open, and without the UV coating to protect them they will be bombarded by the worst wavelengths. You'll literally ruin your eyes.

Actually not true, when I was living in NYC the New England Journal of Medicine reported that cheap sunglasses offer the same protection as expensive ones. Each blocked 99% of UV rays. Hence, I never wasted $$ on pricier shades again.

Interesting. I'll have to seek out and read that study. Thanks.

I think Consumer Reports also said the same thing a few years back. I'll have to check.

Here you go, as long as they are labelled with the proper protection then they are fine (and they legally have to be labelled):

This is funny, I've been looking for a new pair of sunglasses since my trip to Anguilla as my Oakley Ducati Gascans got scratched beyond repair! They replaced my Oakley Ducati Monster Dogs, and I loved them both! Now I'm looking at Oakley Ducati Hijinx, Oakley Minutes 2.0 in metallic Blue, or Spy Dirty Mo glasses, I just can't decide yet!

So for now I'll wear the glasses my wife says makes me look "Most Handsome"

Hahaha. Yeah, there's the rub. They legally have to be sold in a store and not be counterfeit too - yet that doesn't seem to have much bearing on the illegal practices being discussed. You have no idea if the stickers touting UV protection on the particular pair you buy on the street mean anything.

True, but Target is a store and they sell with the label for about $10 with 99% protection. I have always been very good about taking care of my things, but for some reason pens are always lost (probably started in my bartending days) and sunglasses always break or get lost. For me? Better to get cheap that way I could care less.

UV protection is not the only factor in judging the quality of sunglasses though. The cheap ones may offer the same type of UV protection as a more expensive one but lens quality such as clarity and uniformity is also crucial in protecting your eyes. If the thickness and curvature of the lens is not correct, light is bent and refracted into your retina and the image is slightly distorted. This is why sometimes people get headaches wearing cheap glasses because of small distortions.
