i got scammed like that before.. i owed 15K for the car when i was selling it. the guys from "dealershi" bought the car and signed the paper that they will transfer money to my bank to pay it off. Later my bank called and said the car was never paid off. Apparently the "dealer" disn't have a license anymore and that paper he signed was nothing.

luckuly my bank freezed the account and investigated the situation. it's been 2 years since and they wrote off my loan (i'm not sure what happened to those guys)

"those guys" got arrested, caught a plea and probably paid back like 15 cents on every dollar they stole... the law is an amazing thing in the States. Back in Russia... well, let's just say, these guys wouldn't have gotten off nearly as easy

ain't nothing wrong with being civilized. The only thing that is messed up is the bureaucracy that's gotten so out of hand that our laws do not punish those who steal, as long as they do it cleverly...

He called me 4 days later stating that my car was great and has been registered with his DMV and passed emissions.
This sounds like a hoax. Why would the scammer call the seller 4 days later to say the car was great? However, Im sure this type of scam happens all the time.

Now I know why I'd rather trade in my cars (yes, I know I get less for them) than deal with private buyers. So much easier and better, the only cars I have sold privately have all been cash transactions, someone should have told this guy to tell the buyer "when I get the $$$ you get the keys - not before"
Exactimundo my friend! Dealing with private party just sucks horseballs and although I'm no where near rich, I don't mind getting a thousand or maybe two thousand less and not have to deal with the stress. I can't even imagine what this dude is going through right now. Good luck to him.

If you do decide to sell private party and still have a loan on it, go through the dealership. My last truck was a lease that I had for a year. I found a legit guy to buy it and we both decided to do it at the dealership. The dealership did charge a $500 "transfer fee" that the buyer and myself decided to split, but I got confirmation that everything went through and processed, I slept well that night.

Does the guy even have a case? He gave away the car for $0. It's all in the papers he signed.
