Nevermind how this came up, but a co-worker and I are debating the logistics of going from San Francisco, CA to Las Vegas, NV, in 7 hours flat.

He seems to think its not doable. In order to reach there in 7 hours, the car would have to be going a constant 90~MPH, and thats accounting for gas breaks. In my E60 I'm convinced its totally possible to make it there. What do you guys think? Here are some of the issues he thinks might come up

* Engine/transmission failure from constant high speeds
>> These cars are built to do this, I dont see a problem here

* Tire wear/melting from high speeds
>> I can see this is a potential problem driving through the desert.

This guy, Alex Roy went from New York, NY to LA in 31 hours in an M5. Thats a 95 mph average including stops. So it can be done. He had a larger gas tank, multiple GPS's for routing redundancy, night vision, laser jammers, police scanner, light kill switches, co-pilot and navigator, and more. Get "The Driver". Its a great read.

The Z rated tires are good for a constant 150 mph. 90ish is no problem, even at dessert temps. The biggest risk is to your license and inoccent bystanders.

2 things not being considered here....

1. How about the local law enforcement and the likely tickets you will receive.

2. Southwest flies to Vegas MANY times a day, and you will be there in 1 hour instead of 7!

MapQuest says the trip is 569 miles.
Average 81mph and you are there in 7.02 hours.

And, as a bonus, you can have a bloody mary on the flight!
Get Vegas started early!

And, if you book early enough, you can get a flight round-trip for under $150.
