Road trip completed
#1
Me and a friend of mine covered about 1 500 kms over two days last week on a pretty nice road trip.
The overall consumption was down to 7 litres/100 km, and at times the OBC told me I would be able to do 1000 km per tank
One thing I noticed during this trip was that the runflats seem to have become a bit less noisy (about 20 000 km on the tyres), but sadly there's not much tread left, and I'll probably have to purchase a new set after the summer.

Hi Paasan,
Where abouts was the picture taken?
Re the tyres, I'm convinced that the 16" non run flats on the loaner 523i I have are providing a much smoother ride than the 17" type 138's on my own 520. This and the servotronic steering, I believe, are having a benefit that is greater than the sum of the individual options. I am planning on doing a back-to-back test with someone I know (although he doesn't know it yet) with a 525 (M54 engine) and type 138 17" wheels. Only way is to get in to one car directly after the other and drive over the same course. It might determine the differences in tyres. I am assuming here that there hasn't been any suspension changes to the car when it got the new engines.
At this stage, I would seriously consider putting non run flats if u have to change.
Obviously you will need to carry a sparejust in case.
I'll let u know my findings.

Thanks. The picture was taken at Laksforsen ("Salmon Waterfall" - salmon comes here to spawn, and actually climbs up the waterfall) in Mid-Norway. At this time of year there's much water in the rivers, and this waterfall becomes quite scenic.
Yes - I am definitely going to buy non runflats. The difference in price and comfort is important, and from what I can tell non-runflats will provide better economy and way improved comfort. I'm thinking Michelin Pilot Sport SP2 is the most relevant candidate.

I have the standard runflats, 18" Dunlops. I definitely hear everybody complaining about the runflats, but I think I would really miss just KNOWING about the runflat feature. When I'm driving my family in the dark winter on the expressway, it is worth a lot to me to know I won't have to pull over and change onto a little baby donut spare. I guess better comfort every day just trumps that low-probability safety factor in the mind of most people. Maybe I'll change my mind, too.
