You get what you pay for, there are reasons why things are priced the way it is...

pay a little extra or "lend" her another 1000 bucks to get something more reliable... then she can pay you back like 50-100 bucks a month for the extra 1000 and that builds responsibility also.

for me theres nothing more annoying/unsettling than knowing your car isn't reliable. but thats just me

Ask the owner if the car was serviced at a dealer. If yes, then the owner can ask the dealer to give a printout of all the work that was done on the car.

If the work was not done at a dealer, then things maybe iffy. Maybe take it to a dealer for inspection? 170K is not a lot for a well maintained Toyota.

Based on my own experience I see this as a Toyota myth. I don't think Toyota's are any more dependable than other Japanese or German vehicles and that includes American made Japanese vehicles like many of the Toyota's of today.

... how about knowing that your child's car isn't reliable / safe ... I don't plan on spoiling my kids when they get older, but no way would I let them drive round in a car that could a) break down when they are on their own at night, b) not offer the best protection possible if involved in a crash.

Some things are worth more to me than teaching my kids a lesson in financial management, such as their safety.

My 22 year old daughter is thinking about buying a used 1995 Toyota Avalon XLS with 170,000 miles. It's a 2-owner car, and tires are new, but the owner has few receipts. My biggest worry: no evidence/receipt of timing belt replacement, and if that fails my daughter won't be able to pay the repair bill. KBB shows $3700 PP valuation for the Avalon. Seems like a good deal, but...whadaya think?
Are you going to rebadge it as a Lexus? ................ Sorry, I could'nt help myself (555 )

Holy pomposity! Maybe some facts will help you: The '95-'99 Avalon crash-test results were all 4s and 5s...in other words in the top 90th percentile for safety. If someone T-bones my daughter in the Avalon (touch wood that never happens) , she is WAY better off inside that car than in most others. And, um, Beemers break down just as much (if not more so) than Toyotas. We buy the 5-series for pure driving fun, not for Japanese reliability.

I wasn't talking specifically about the Avalon, I was replying to the person who I quoted, which wasn't you. I was stating that if it meant the difference between buying an unsafe unreliable car or me putting some money towards the car, I know which I would choose.
