Firstly, I'll explain why I chose the Saab in the first place.

As I drive company cars, it all comes down to how much tax I have to pay. It used to be based on engine size, which is why I had no bigger than 2.0 litre cars for many years. It changed to tax emissions a while back, which decides how much tax I pay based upon the amount of CO2 it emits.

Company cars at my business are grouped, and a I can chose from any car in my group or below. Anything above that, I have to pay extra.

So, in 2002 I tried various cars inc. Jaguar X-type 3.0, Volvo S80.

1) I like to be different, I like a car that is not too popular, something rare and special.

2) It also comes down to value. I know I don't pay, but it's still nice to have a car that has twice as much gear than another car that costs the same, but has less stuff.

3) In the UK BMW's have an image problem, BMW drivers are perceived as 'arrogant', 'selfish', 'aggressive', and 'big headed'. Not the qualities I want to be associated with, however good the car is.

Anyway, the Saab Aero, was by far the fastest car I had driven, it was UNDER my group, so I could have it, with extras like upgraded stereo and electric memory seats all for the equivalent cost of a 2002 525i, which although dynamically better, was just not a good 'value'. Each to their own.

Anyway to answer your question: After the Saab died, I decided not to have another one, and to take the opportunity to change. Also the company car tax thing favored diesels, so It was time to consider one, albeit my first.

I test drove a 2004 (new shape) Audi A6 3.2 FSI, with 10k of extras, although it was just to test the car, not the engine, which would have been a 2.5 TDI or 2.4 Petrol. It felt too big, and a base model with small engine, not much fun.

A MB E270CDI, which was very nice, fast and great. Although a bit 'old man' for my liking, also looks boring

A BMW 530d, and 525d, the 530d to test the car, and 525d the engine. There wasn't too much difference, and 525d was slightly under budget, so it was 525d with extras, or standard 530d. The BMW was by far the best to drive, best built / on par with A6, good looking, cheapest to run, fastest, (A6 2.4/2.0TDI/MB 220CDI - as it turned out I could only have the lesser engines rather than bigger as stated before  ).

The sport had just come out, my dealer showed me pics, and I saw it and loved the look. I chose the sport, added my options, inc. leather, pro radio/sat nav/auto dim mirrors, and concluded, it was the best value, the best performance, and best looking car compared to the competition.

So after a while I had warmed to the BMW, and searched for forums on google, found this, and hence my name, have since changed my opinion on BMW's, although not necessarily the drivers!

Because the fire had burnt though the electronics and computers, it had started itself, all the electrical equipment probably going crazy. The photo was taken just after they had extinguisted the flames, and were trying to get to the bonnet to remove the battery.
