Reading over some of the tips makes sense, but shutting off the engine at every stoplight? Doesn't it take more fuel just to start it than to wait?

It might save fuel, but constant engine startups can wear out an engine, battery, and starter faster.

Don't you guys know the new BMWs has the automatic shut down/restart function?
Here in Finland the maximum time you can let the motor run when stopped is 2 minutes. At cold times it's allowed to run the motor for 15 minutes to warm it up.
