Taking the wife out to dinner tonight at one of our favorite eateries, Matsuhisa in Bev Hills....used to golf with Nobu at the Wilshire Country Club....

Here's my question for you food connoisseurs....

Are you more about the food, or the trendiness of the establishment? Granted that Matsuhisa is pretty trending, but we really love their sushi. That being said, we have been to Koi, which is pretty trendy and has a lot of celebs frequenting there. However, we didn't like it. On that note, Mr. Chow's in Bev Hills is trendy, but the food there is less to be desired in relation to the cost...I get more satisfaction eating at PF Chang's instead.

Your thoughts?

Thanks for your feedback...

IMO, that varies from person to person. I personally love trendy places. if i was going on a date, i might sacrifice the quality of the food for atmosphere, providing the food is still great, just not the best.

example... there is a place in tampa that has the best sushi. it is called "the rack" it is college-trendy if you will. it has pool tables, which is a clear sign of lack of classiness. i dont like the atmosphere and i wouldnt take a date there. i would go there with a girlfriend or someone i have been seeing for a while, but the sushi IS THE BEST.

then there place at skypointe downtown tampa called "raw bar". it is new, clean, dark, has like 30-40 ft ceilings, very trendy, they have a DJ there. the sushi is overpriced, but it is good, not for the price, but it is good. you are paying for the atmosphere. the staff is all very attractive, as are the other patrons. This is where i would take a date.

I go for the food quality. I don't care about much else, as I am confident that most of the "atmosphere" on a date comes from the mood I create...

naturally, we fight all the time

Both ... especially if it's a special occasion.

But since you said "wife", I would definitely say food quality is a
must followed by trendiness. The atmosphere helps but is not the
determining factor. After all, you can always follow-up the dinner
by going somewhere trendy for drinks or dessert afterward.

Back in my single days, if I went on a date to a restaurant it was all about the food.

I love to eat. And I love great restaurants.

To me, food quality is 100 times more important than atmosphere. The best restaurants usually combine both but since I am being asked to pick which is more important, I say food quality is by a country mile.

i'd rather take food quality over atmosphere hands down

i'm a man of many tastes:
i can go for a roast prime rib at Lawry's $50+
or get the plate lunch braised ribs with gravy at Bruddah's for $12

i'm in it for the flavor, freshness, aroma, authenticity, culture... damn i'm getting hungry!

btw go to yelp dot com, lots of foodies go there, and evaluate restaurants. gives you lots of feedback
and what dishes to order, pricing, atmosphere, etc.

Food quality is #1; but if the atmosphere is there too, then its even better.

Definitely the food, it's a plus if the place is trendy.

I don't like it too trendy since there's too much pretentious bull$hit. Everyone is acting like they're rich.
