ya i heard about this a couple months ago. AOL is a bit behind on the story.

It's a very tragic story and i feel bad for the family. They should have put car into neutral and shut it off. that car has a push button start/ stop like ours and if memory is correct you could still put into neutral to shut it off as it wouldn't turn off while in drive.

Now I'm sure we would all react in a different manner under extreme mental pressure like they were when they called 911. But i know this car could have been stopped without a tragic outcome

I posted the 911 call to this a few months ago.

Honestly if they just slammed the tranny in neutral everyone would have been fine. The 911 call was at least a good 40-50 seconds.

Everyone says that he should have put the car in neutral, but try putting our cars in neutral while on the accelerator. Your foot has to be off the accelerator and the brake must be depressed 25% in order to unlock the shifter, allowing us to shift into neutral.

Also the car was a loaner, and say he had an older model lexus like a 2006, he would not know how to stop the car with a push button because this feature was added in 2007. My question is, why didn't using the brake work.

Toyota doesn't have an accelerator override feature like 99% of other car companies have

i have had carpets slide under the brake in other cars but the first thing that would come to my mind was to reach down and pull it towards me, which i could do without ever taking my eyes off the road... i'm just glad they've put out a recall, though it was too late for this family :/

Regardless of why, it's sad.

this is of course tragic, but i am blown away by this one fact:

there were TWO police officers in the car and neither one thought of pulling the mat back or killing the engine or putting it in neutral?

While I feel for this family and their loss is truly horrible, this could have been avoided and I dont think lexus is soley to blame.

the world isn't perfect, and sometimes a little common sense can go a long way.

I turn in my 535 and get a chevy colbalt.

BMW blows.
