President Bush was visiting an elementary school and wandered into a busy classroom. The class were in the middle of a group discussion relating to words and their different meanings. Invited by the teacher to join in, the President asked the children to give him examples of the use of the word ?tragedy?.
One little boy stood up and whispered ? If my best friend who lives on a farm was playing in the cornfield and was run over by his dads combine harvester, that would by a tragedy?.
After a moments pause, Bush replied, ?Actually, no, that would be an accident?.
A little girl raised her hand, stood up and spoke; ?If the school bus carrying 50 children drove over a cliff, killing all inside, that would be a tragedy?.
After a pause, and a prompt from his closest aide, Bush replied; ?I think not. This would be referred to as a great loss.?
The room went silent. No other child volunteered in case they also felt foolish in getting the question wrong.
?Isn?t there anyone here who can give me an example of a tragedy?? Asked the illustrious leader.
Finally, from the back of the room a scruffy boy raised his hand and spoke softly.
?If Air Force One was carrying you and the First Lady was to be stuck by a friendly fire missile and blown to smithereens, this would be a tragedy?.
?Fantastic!? Exclaimed Bush, ?That?s right. But now can you tell all the class why this would be a tragedy??
?Well,? said the boy, ?It has to be a tragedy, because it certainly wouldn?t be a great loss and it probably wouldn?t be a f***ing accident either!?
