I am on the edge of buying a PAM 233.
I was wondering: how do you recognise a fake from a real Panerai???

Doc, 233 is a nice piece to have! the 1950 case is just stellar.
Fake or real, I would suggest to buy from the AD, or if you are looking for a pre-owned one, make sure you triple-times cross reference the seller. The fakes are getting better and better each day. It's scary. I even saw a fake one on the bay site, it comes with the warranty card, service card, etc.
Where are you planning to get the 233?

Actually I was wondering this in general. Maybe there are some details, or by weight or numbers inscripted or so.
I saw some obviously fake 233, just by telling the 8 days powerreserve meter wasn't there, just the text 8 days.
Real ones come in their original box, with papers, two straps, screwdriver, silicon protecting thing.
Actually I was planning to buy it from a legit shop, where I can always go back to. (should be safe)

Good fakes are hard to spot. Even Panerai experts can get burned, especially on vintage pieces. Only real way to know is have Panerai inspect and verify the watch. Bottom line is know from whom you're buying.

Too broad a question. There are lots of ways to make a fake. Some are easy to spot, others really hard. Kind of like asking "how do you spot fake boobs."
