I hate to be that nerdy guy pointing out the details, but there isn't any 1080p broadcast television.

Your TV set might be 1080p, but it's receiving signals that are either 1080i or 720p.

There are some HD on-demand movies on Dish that are 1080p, but this is the only media that is true 1080p (other than Bluray).
And you are right! Standard HD pictures look great too, but BluRay on my 1080p looks so awesome!

MiamiPhill,

This is a pulldown issue (cadence), not a signal quality issue. I need to know the brand/model of the set top box, and the resolution/mode that is being fed to the TV, the interface, etc...

I know that some of the 120hz Sammy TVs have firmware updates that enable better pulldown. I'll investigate and get back to you.

No set top, just quick & dirty basic cable straight from the wall into the TV, that transmitts both an analog & digital signal.

Ok, so MiamiPhill...

I found a reference stating that your television will correctly refresh at 120hz -if- and -when- AMP (Auto Motion Plus) is turned off. Turn this "feature" off and your TV will operate properly.

This thread states that turning it off works:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=997138

This thread explains AMP and 120hz processing (and pitfalls):

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1029004

You might also run the "upgrade firmware" utility from the menu to ensure that you're running the latest firmware. As far as I can tell, turning off AMP should fix your issue, but I think newer firmwares enable 5:5 pulldown - you might already have the latest though.

Hey thanks UUronl, I'll try that and post the results.

As UUronL points out, broadcast TV is low quality and the higher end TVs today, even when then "step-up" the signal only really amplify that poor quality..

Sorry, my first post was made before I read and processed the original complaint. I didn't mean for my comment to be interpreted in this manner. A high-definition TV that isn't overly sharpened and has any offending internal processing turned off can and should look just great with standard definition TV. Both of my HD sets look fantastic with SD content. However, my plasma has the sharpness as low as it goes (the setting is described by a negative integer) and my Sony LCD RPTV is set very very low and has the internal edge enhancement turned off from the service menu.

It's also helpful to determine which zoom/scaling looks better. My cable boxes comb when I set them to zoom, (for pillar-boxed and letterboxed 16:9 SD content) but if I use the TV zoom, the image doesn't comb and it looks far better. YMMV.

I hate to say it, but you're not watching TV in 1080p. Most likely, you're watching it in 1080i if you're on your HD channels (it could be 720 as well, but most likely, it's 1080i). There's not enough bandwidth to serve HD broadcast television in 1080p. Regardless though, 1080i still looks great.

Well... depends "which" 1080p you're talking about.

ATSC (US) defines 1080p30 and 1080p24 as part of the standard 18 formats.

1080p24 will fit in the 6MHz channel. This would be ok for film content, but 1080i60 would still be far better for sports. Currently, all the 720p material in the US is 720p60, which is much better for temporal resolution during fast motion. 1080p60 would be ideal for 1080p direct-from-camera content, but it's not part of the ATSC standard and will not fit on the width of the carrier.

Yes, I turned off the AutoMotion plus and the problem was solved.
I still can't believe there are people who like that soap opera look in their movies and network dramas.
