...so vivid it makes the shows a bit too.....erm....Real looking, sort of like a local news live shot, or soap opera recorded with a video cam.
Or am I just mad, like Mrs. MP thinks.?

After re-reading this - I think I know what's going on... Is your set one of the 120hz scan rate panels? It may be what is causing this "video look". If the pulldown is done incorrectly, the image can look pretty awful. I saw a Sony XBR5 the other day at a Magnolia/Best Buy on the wall. It was playing Casino Royale, and it was terrible. This is odd considering that it is one of the few sets that can do 5:5 pulldown (that's good - a high-end feature that can make one 120hz set better than another).

Shoot me the details of your setup and I'll probably be able to figure it out.

Adjust the output from your source, i.e. Blu Ray to 24p output, and disable the 120 hz mode. You'll see the true HD film look you're looking for, and not the "TV" look that 1920X1080 with 120 hz can exhibit. Give it a look and see what you think.

Actually, my issue is with primetime TV drama series like CSI, not with the Blu Ray. Interestingly, my older tube HDTV which is 480p/i offers a more pleasing (to me) picture, crisp, clean & detailed but the 'movie look' is preserved.
On the other hand, live programing (sports, concerts and such) is outstanding.

As UUronL points out, broadcast TV is low quality and the higher end TVs today, even when then "step-up" the signal only really amplify that poor quality..

Love my 50 inch samsung plasma. Its not 1080P but its still a great picture, plus almost none of the programming is in 1080P yet. And I only watch HD channels now. Time warner has a very good amount of them, I'm happy.

It does, don't get me wrong.....it's just that in CSI, Law & Order et.al I'm now starting to notice more flaws in the set, the actors makeup, and so forth.
I see the flaws too... I guess some things haven't caught up to the broadcast technology!
