The M5 time is still shown as the Sport Auto time with an early production bone stock car. One disadvantage of the stock M5 is the 155mph limiter. I bet it was hit repeatedly around the 'Ring. Who knows how the track conditions between the runs match up as well. I'd really like to see Hans Stuck or Sabine pilot the M5 CSL prototype around the ring. If its not faster, then I'd bow to the CTS-V.
Re this CTS-V demonstration, who knows how hard the M5 driver pushed his car? They claim the M3 driver had the advantage of track experience. What if the M5 driver had never driven anywhere other than the NJ Turnpike, or LA bumper to bumper traffic?
Track experience, ability, and the willingness to push a car is the key. I personally know a newbie E92 M3 driver who matched the times of a $190k Porsche GT2 at VIR. As did my 550i. Therefore I conclude my 550i is as fast as the Porsche!!!!

It's absolutely a true comparison. The M5 time was from the editor of Sport Auto, Horst von Saurma, who holds the fastest time records for a number of different cars including many BMW records. Either way, it doesn't change the fact that no-one, Sabine or otherwise, has ever gone round the Ring in an M5 with a timed lap faster than Horst Von Saurma. Stock for stock, the simple fact is that the CTS-V has a much faster Ring time than the M5.

Knock 12 seconds off the E60 M5 time and it would be close. And as mentioned, it wasn't stock for stock. If Horst von Saurma is so good, let him drive a STOCK CTS-V and match THAT time to the M5. Also have him keep it to 155mph max, to be truely fair. But I'd give him that since I could buy and drive a CTS-V faster than that. Thrown in jail, yes, but I could.

I can think of a fair few cars well under 250K that have a much better exhaust note than the M5 - Maserati QP/Gran Turismo etc, Aston Vantage/DB9 etc. There are plenty of others if you set the bar that high!

Most races are only determined by fractions of a second.
However, the only place I've seen the CTS-V only beat the M-5 by "fractions" of a second, is 0 - 60 (3.9 -vs- 4.5), and that's 3-4 car lengths at speed.
Everywhere else, track, figure 8, Nurburring (sp) the CTS-V has got it's butt kicked over it's shoulders by the CTS-V.
Give credit where its due (I'm still surprised an M3 could hang with a CTS-v. I' have to take your word for it because I can't get the link to play.)
That said, I'd take my M5 in burgundy, with the automatic- just because of what it is...
Then again, I LOVE a "sleeper". I bet that CTS (even the base CTS with 304 HP V6) will give some 5-series owners who think they're hot s**t, some nightmares- not to mention a severe dose of embarrassment having to tell their girlfriend- something was wrong with their car, as to why they just got schooled by a lady in a CTS.
