After much discussion and looking at what many other forums do in regards to this topic we have decided to make a few changes to the Lounge forum effective immediately. Those changes are:

1. Posts in the Lounge will no longer increment your overall post count
2. Posts in the Lounge will no longer show up in the "View New Posts" link

Please also remember that posts in the lounge must be kept PG-13. This means, and is not only limited to, no adult material including soft-core porn pictures or anything of the sort. Sure we all like that stuff but the forums is not the proper place for such materials. Also please do not post any gory images or any text or images that might offend other members in regards to their political view or religion. These are very touchy topics and often cause a lot of forum drama due to the vast differences in views of our members so we'd like to try to avoid such conflicts in the future. Forum members need not be separated by such topics. Just remember that we are all on the forums for one common reason/topic and that is the BMW 5 Series, first and foremost.

What, Lounge posts will no longer add to my post count? That's it, I'm outta here!

Thanks Lomag! I think these minor adjustments will help make the forum an even better place!!

Just a thought, but on many of the forums I visit they don't display post count but do have more member titles and bandings that are effectively tied to a member's underlying post count. I wonder if we'd see fewer pointless posts aimed at increasing one's post count if the "prize" were less immediate and less visible?

Maybe we could consider creating some new bandings for members with, say, 5000, 7500 and 10,000 posts or more? It ties back to the same thing, of course, but the current post count rewards the poor behavior with an immediate boost and it's very visible. Under the alternative proposed here, there's no easy way to tell how near or far you are from the next "banding". I have to think that takes away at least one of the incentives for pointless and meaningless posts.

Your thoughts?

Swajames made an excellent point. Just to add to that: perhaps our forum titles should be based on how helpful we are to other users and how much we contribute. For instance, every DIY thread can have a "dig it" tab that visitors can click, effectively voting for or against any specific write-up. Likewise, all responses to threads asking for help can also be rated, giving the people who help members the most, the highest forum status. This was "off the top of my head", but I think you see where I'm going with this. If you'd like me to share more on this subject, please PM me - as I might not see what you answered to this post with the changes in effect

BTW I actually have to say, I think this is the best move for everyone - the lounge is the lounge and the fact that I post 50 posts per day in the lounge does not make me a pro.

Maybe even take it a step further and grant titles based on the area of the site a user contributes/posts in the most. For example, my title would be professional post whore based on the amount of crap I post on the Lounge section I joke, but the point is valid IMHO. Of course, it is your decision, but I think this - if it is not a logistical nightmare to implement - would be the fairest way.

After further discussion and although no members have complained about this, I've decided to re-add Lounge posts to the "View New Posts" link. Many members use this feature and it's not fair to exclude Lounge posts there. However, Lounge posts will still not incremement a members overall post count.

This clears it up now.. Browsing this morning, I was surprised to see
the Lounge as part of the "View New Posts" feature. Glad to hear that
it still excludes from the overall post count.
