Left my cell phone in my rental car when I returned it on Friday. I realized this as I was at the gate, with my flight about to be called. I fully intended to contact my provider when I got home, but first wanted to talk to Budget to see if they had found it (faint hope, even if they did). I did try to get on a pay phone (anybody remember how those work? ). What a comedy of errors. Choices...4 quarters for 4 minutes, or $20 of time to use a credit card. So.....I buy a hot dog and manage to get change for a dollar. First phone, no dial tone. 2nd phone...took my quarters, and that was it.

So....I did call Budget on my husband's phone that afternoon, but apparently their lost and found was closed for the weekend. I should have disabled the phone right away, but I hadn't lost a phone before so I wasn't sure what to do about that, and of course I was optimistic that if they found it, I might get it back (idiot).

Just checked my account. Looks like I'm going to have about $120. in media charges at least. Someone's been havin' a good time. At least I put a stop to it, and of course there are phone numbers of record listed, so there may be a chance of identifying the individual if they work for Budget. But in reality world, I just had an expensive lesson. Hopefully that's the only fall-out from it, or I may have to shoot myself.

Damn damn damn....

That sucks. I don't think you're an idiot for thinking someone would return the phone. I found a Blackberry in the parking garage at work last December. Not two minutes after I picked it up, it rang and was the guy's wife. I told her I had the phone and he could drop by my office and pick it up the next morning. He came by, thanked me, that was that.

Do you at least have your contact list saved online by the provider? That's the biggest PITA I would imagine.

Also, if you explain things to your carrier, they'll probably cancel those text charges since clearly you didn't make them--kind of like with credit cards.

Good luck.

Thanks...I guess I was hoping someone honest would find it. I've been pretty fortunate that way before (once dropped my AmEx card at the gas pump ...guy that picked it up called me directly rather than give it to the clerks, whom he wasn't sure he could trust). Do you see a trend here? Senility perhaps

I didn't have my contact list backed up, unfortunately. I even started to do this recently but never did set it up... Fortunately, I don't have too many contacts but I'm thinkin' I should get on my account right now and set that up for my husband. THAT would be a PITA.

Have you tried calling your phone and asking for it? That might freak them out a bit.

Yeah...I have considered that. Thought I might give Budget a chance to investigate without tipping them off first.

Send them a text message "from the CDC" stating they have confirmed you have the H1N1 virus and should consider anything you've been close enough to breath on an infection source.
