I'm browsing on ebay and checking Craigs List for the moment.
Anyone have a usable 850/900/1800/1900 Quad or Tri Mode GSM Cell they'd want to sell or lend me for a couple of weeks?

If not Virgin, there are likely a numbers of providers (O2 etc) who offer similar service.

I would suggest simply buying one while you are there. Try Virgin Mobile, it's who we use in London and have the phones for several years now. No service plan, pay as you go. The basic phones are dirt cheap if not free and you simply top up as needed. Most major retailer's sell the top up cards, very simple. And the calling rates back to the US aren't too bad either.

Thanks - the Virgin retailers here in the states don't offer much if any advice about service on the other side of the pond. Is there a "Wally World" or equivalent in Dublin - out first stop?

Just pop into a Carphone Warehouse when you land in Ireland. There should be one in the airport and grab a PAYG phone. Dirt cheap. Throw away really!

CarphoneWarehouse Ireland
You'll need this link instead. Turns out the Brit CPW is different from the Ireland one. Makes sense really!!!
Sorry for the misguided info earlier.
Thanks for the support on the Marathon.
