Nice vid. My niece has a D40 and really likes it. I agree the lens is the more important part. The 18-55 is a good starter lens.
Good photos are also more about the photographer than the equipment. I know a guy with a D50 that takes great pics, pro quality much of the time. I think he has the 18-55 as well.

have decided to take up photography again, so after reading up on what's available out there, i decided on the cheaper d40.
i realize that if i buy any other lens, it needs to be auto focus. but since i don't own any other, i figure the 18-55mm lens is fine by me for now.
once i get the hang of it again, i'll probably have the urge to upgrade - but that's for another day.

anyway, i thought i'd make a video of the unboxing. new toys are always fun
Dude! What a great idea to make a video out of the Grand Opening!
I see there are many Nikon fans out there, but I'm actually a Canon fan. I just purchased a 40D and the box came with all kinds of cool stuff. I wish I video taped it also - it would have been really cool!

Happy to see you got a lens filter. Very important. Hope it's got UV protection.

And to answer the question about the lens hood, Yes, a good quality one really works. I won't waste time with a replica or after-market. Some just don't fit correct and don't block the sun the same way. I used my hood all the time in the sun and it really helps.

The weather has been really nasty in my area, otherwise I would have already taken pic's of my new 545i and shared them. Hopefully soon...

Congratulations on the new D40. You can't go wrong with Nikon... but Canon's great also!

I have D40x with 18-200VR lens and it is a good combo for everyday picture taking. Invest in lenses, but make sure they are compatible with what you are going to buy next (rather buy compatible camera in the future).

Me too ... but the prices on the image stab lenses is a killer. I paid almost $400 for a Canon zoom lense alone! Bought mine last year and considered the Nikon D40x and the e410/e510 from Olympus but was swayed in my buying decision by a family member. I've had other Canon's and liked the brand.

In retrospect I miss the use of the LCD to compose and would have had a wider more economical choice of additional lenses with the DSLR's with Image Stabilization on the body instead of in the lense.

when i bought this on ebay, the seller included a tiffen UV filter and a 2GB card.

for the photogs out there, does a lens hood really help in bright outdoor situations?
a friend of mine swears by it, but wanted to hear your comments. thanks
A lens hood helps in nearly every situation. Its main purpose is to reduce extraneous light from entering your lens and help reduce vingetting. Its other dual purpose is that if you ever drop your camera, its easier and cheaper to replace a lens hood than a broken front element on your lens. Its very, very rare that I shoot without a lens hood on - and most of my shooting is sports at night or in low-light.

Lenses with nice glass come with a hood for a reason.

Congrats to the OP. I started with a Nikon D70 (still have it) but I mainly shoot my Canon 5D. Stuff is getting so good now. The new Nikon D90 and Canon 50D are super.

The 5D replacement gets announced tomorrow!

The most exciting stuff though IMO, is the new Micro 4/3 format (Olympus/Panasonic). No mirror, so it's not an SLR, but you can change lenses. Same big sensor, great optics, but small small body and lenses. Also, electronic viewfinder and LCD view.

Panasonic announced the first of these last week.
