KYOTO, JAPAN ? Scientists in Japan say they have the technology and know-how to create a living wooly mammoth via cloning. The wooly mammoth became extinct thousands of years ago.

Japanese researchers say they will begin a project this year to resurrect the mammoth using cloning technology ala Jurrasic Park. The scientist believe they will be able to bring the creature to life in around five years.

The work begins by obtaining tissue from the carcass of a mammoth preserved in a Russian research laboratory. Akira Iritani, the leader of the scientists has said all the necessary preparations have been made
?Under the plan, the nuclei of mammoth cells will be inserted into an elephant's egg cell from which the nuclei have been removed, to create an embryo containing mammoth genes, the report said.
AFP reports:
?The embryo will then be inserted into an elephant's uterus in the hope that the animal will eventually give birth to a baby mammoth.
?The elephant is the closest modern relative of the mammoth, a huge woolly mammal believed to have died out with the last Ice Age.
?Some mammoth remains still retain usable tissue samples, making it possible to recover cells for cloning, unlike dinosaurs, which disappeared around 65 million years ago and whose remains exist only as fossils?
The Japanese scientists have invited a Russian mammorth researcher and two U.S. elephant experts to join their project.
The scientists have yet to decide, should they be successful, if they will allow the wooly mammoth to be displayed to the public.
