Thank God no one got hurt.

I wonder what will they tell their children / grand children ( if they have them ): Hey Son, I was being a bad boy, fooling around on the computer and not paying attention. Wonder why they fired me?

I don't think we have the full story yet. Not to excuse what happened, it is what it is and on the face of it things look fairly clear cut, but it's maybe a little premature to cast judgment when we don't have all the facts...

My point exactly, what IF they had hurt people. Would it be ok to let them retain their pilot's license? I starting to think no. Also, with all the warnings from the ground, and even warnings that the plane could give you, they still didn't respond?? What convo was so important that you forgot you were FLYING A PLANE??

I agree. And we may never know the full story.

At 450 airspeed that is (give or take) 20 minutes overshoot. However they normally begin their decent 100 (give or take) miles before wheels down.

That means they were ?out of touch? for 33 minutes (give or take) because of (both of them!!) checking flight schedules on their laptops.

Something else was happening.

[Maybe some heavy equipment driver can refine my numbers.]

When the news first broke, it was said the pilot and co-pilot were engaged in a heated debate about something.. Airline policy, US politics, or something...

The only thing I can think of that gets people so heated that they lose track of everything, is politics.

While I'm sure we all BS at work and what not, and on face value have no right to judge people for BSing t work- what makes the difference here is, 99.9% of us, don't have jobs that if we eff up, people might die. Unnecessarily inconvenienced maybe, delayed maybe, but not dead...

The good news here is, no one got hurt or killed-

I hate to see anyone lose their ability to earn a salary in their chosen career. Nevertheless, I am all for firing these SOB's, or suspending them for months with a hefty fine- one of the two.

Yanking his or her pilot's license, while certainly understandable to en extent, I think may be overkill, when no one got hurt. Lives were put at risk through ultra-poor judgment, so while I may not have made the choice the FAA made, I certainly understand...

Wal-Mart is hiring...

Make an example!

Just the same with drunken pilots!
+1 They have the lives of HUNDREDS of passengers in their hands and they can't even PAY ATTENTION???? I'm glad they were fired, and good luck ever getting back into the cockpit of a passenger jet again! There are THOUSANDS of pilots waiting to get into (or back into in the case of my friend who flew for United) the cockpit and they WOULD pay attention too! Good riddance I say!

my friend is a pilot, he said they lost there license's to fly.. looks like there gonna have to find a new career. i think what happened is right on que. i mean isnt that why there is 2 of them!? a pilot and a co-pilot? to make sure one is doing right, and vice versa? i certainly wouldnt want any of my family members on it either. tough shit on them seriously. there both idiots and deserve to lose there job.
