so what is different this compared to rebadging to a higher model, or vanity plates, or changing your kidney to match a 545, or sticking smg letters on the side or go-faster stripes, for that matter? or a spoiler? or dingle dice?

The slots on the e46 M3 and the future e60 M5 are pretty much all for show. They claim better airflow but.....
If someone wishes to go to the effort to add to the look of their car, then I'm all for it. It's not like they're painting the car pink, just following the design plans of BMW.
Lots of the things on the car are for show, like spoilers, heavy wheels, front bumpers, front splitters.
