My wife and I are planning on going to Italy for our one year annivarsary in November.
For our honeymoon we went to Hawaii and puchased our pkg from online. It was nice, but in Hawaii there isn't much tour guidence needed. However, this time we are looking to go to Italy and considering what would be best option.

We are going for a week and want a few guided tour in English and then do stuff on our own.
Have you used local travel agents to get the best trip? or online? or whatever other menthod you used.
Please share with me so i can have a GREAT trip too.

Rent a car and drive. That's how I did it last time I was in Italy. Update your GPS with EU maps (these can be found hacked), and you won't have any issues. Google Maps works over there too if you have a suitable phone.

The train is expensive enough these days that it's not really a big difference in cost. Also, it's hard to lug packages and luggage on the trains. Not to mention, you are going to waste time rushing for trains, and pay quite a bit for cab fare to and from train stations, etc...

If you're going to be there in November, you really should go to the national truffle festival. I went back in 2003. It's something to behold. It's in a small town called Acqualagna in the Marche region.

I snapped this shot when I was there.

It's not that bad as people would want you to believe. I've been there a half dozen times and even lived there for a while when I was younger. I never had any problems with thieves and actually had some good experiences like the one I'm about to share:

Some friends and I were travelling north towards Firenze on the freeway and stopped by a rest area for some food and WC breaks. The rest place was crowded with school kids (on some kind of field trip), tourists, etc.

Well anyways, my friend forgot her purse in the bathroom and only remembered it after we were about 5 miles down the road! We hurried back to find it missing... of course.

While we stood there wondering what to do, we saw these 3 kids standing on the corner talking with a policeman who was looking through the contents of a purse. Well, needless to say, we rushed over and the cop identified my friend from her ID card in her purse.

Not often that a bunch of kids would take a purse to a cop to find its owner...

especially when that purse HELD ALL OUR TRAVEL MONEY!!!! All 5000 dollars in cash!!!!

Yep, I have nothing but lots of good stories about my time in Italy.... I'm planning to go back over there some time next year....

Of course, YMMV, and be careful just like you'd be in any urban area.
