Hey cobradav, don't they rely heavily on Gary's forcasting service to determine launches down there?

Now I understand ur comment in the other thread.

Yea, at times that is as good as our WX forecasters can get. In fact: about 1988 I was helping establish specs for what was to be known as the TOCC (Test Operations Support Center - houses all the command and control computers and communications plus the weather forecasting facility). First thing we did was to put a clear plastic bubble in the roof so weather forecaster could actually look at the sky before giving all clear to launch. Why? you might ask. Well in 1986 the first launch right after the Shuttle Challenger disaster was a Atlas/Centaur. We launched in a lightning storm and it was struck by lightning and blew up. When asked why he gave all clear, the Weather Officer said none of his instruments said there was a problem and he could not SEE outside.
