yep, i have a 16x externa,l super multi dvd cd writer gsa-2166d where can i get toast? or would it work with this model
what version of OS X are you running? if you plug the external drive in, click on the apple sign on your left side of the screen, click on about this mac, on the bottom of the window that pops click more info which will launch system profiler. If the system recognizes the drive most like you'll be able to burn what ever information on that DVD burner.

I am confused; why wouldn't he just make a data disk on so on (CD or DVD) using the PC? Shouldn't the SuperDrive be able to read and OS X, or whatever, save the files to the Mac?
I'm confused just like you, the only thing i can think of is the PC doesn't have software to burn the dvd (but he should be able to download the gagillions of free or even trial version from download.com, lol).

I see what you mean; why not? But, burning on the PC is an option too. I am not sure a Mac will burn from an NTSF drive any more than it will copy from one, but maybe????

Good luck. You should have plenty of ideas on how to get your files at this point.

He said the file is on the Mac and going to the PC. So he needs to burn the image on the Mac with an LG drive. Some versions of the native DVD burning software had problems writing to third party external optical drives. It might have just been an issue with iDVD but I could be wrong. I can't remember what version exactly since I've always used Toast. But I think the newer disk utility should work to burn an image onto the drive. Again, Toast would be easier. Even better would be if his Mac had a built in SuperDrive.

I didn't get much sleep last night and should be in bed so forgive me if I'm talking jibberish.

Toast isn't free but it's worth it if you burn DVDs alot and want the ability to use third party drives. Or see if you still have the 'drivers' that came with the DVD burner and it may have a copy of Toast Lite (free).

Yes, you are right. My bad; the files are on the Mac. So why not just burn then as data files on the Mac and use his external DVD on the PC--assuming it works? I hope I didn't read this wrong too. I have a good excuse though--Percocet. Wheee.
