The 8500 is worth the difference over the 8000. The 8500 has local dimming backlighting. The 8000 is edgelit.

Samsung LED TVs are awesome!!! You can't compare it with LCDs or Plasma. Huge difference in picture and motion quality. You need to come in a store and watch a Blu-ray disc side by side by side to tell the difference. Trust me. I was in the market for a flat panel TV as well and after seeing an LED TV in action, i was sold!!!
to OP, samsung is badass! Get the LED, its way thinner and lighter, and i believe it uses less power than LCD and Plasma.
dont forget to extend your warranty beyond 15 months.
My 52 in LCD's capacitor blew out 8 days past the extended manufacturer warranty, and the repair was $400!
i did it myself and soldered a new capacitor to the motherboard and i replaced the rest of the capacitors.
my cost $27. GL!

i LOVE samsungs. I bought my TV from eastcoasttvs.com. Free delivery to the east coast!!! White glove delivery. And if u pay cash, u save 2%. Best of all, you pay when they arrive so u can make sure it works before u pay. Sucks that they ONLY ship to NY, NJ, CT, DC, PA, MD, MA, DE, RI and Northern VA. I'm in NYC so my TV was delivered within 2 days and it was free!

Samsungs are sweet TVs. If you get that LED/120Hz, you will be one happier man. I work at BOSE, so we dont carry many TVs other than Toshiba. I got me a 42" LCD/120Hz for my bedroom.
I got the samsung 55" 6 series LCD (120hz). I have read that in some cases 240hz doesn't look better and that some things look a bit "off" at 240hz based on the way they were produced. That much said, I am a very happy camper with my 120hz model.

really? i though the diff was all software?! good to know NF thanks
Yep, short of a Pioneer Elite plasma, that 8500 is hard to beat. The 8000 won't give you close to the 8500's performance. Backlighting, especially locally dimming, is definitely worthwhile if you're going LED.
