I have a Samsung also as the main TV and I have a NEC in the bedroom. I looked at a lot of TVs before buying the Samsung and obviously liked it the best. I did go plasma over LCD but I understand that LCDs are better now than 2 years ago when I got the Samsung.

go with the samsung led tvs, you won't regret it.... I have a un55b7000 and I love it, an 8500 series is only gonna be a lot sweeter! i thinks sony bravia xbr is good too, but the samsung is so thin

I have a Panasonic plasma - I know, that's like old school but I love the picture on this set. Compared to my Sharp LCD its like a Bimmer to a Hyunday (and the Sharp has a pretty sweet picture to begin with!)
Generally, I think plasma has better, softer feel to it - doesn't feel like I'm watching a big computer screen. So if you want my ADVICE don't leave unattended kids around your new panel. Better yet, get that 55-60in screen and wall-mount that bitch (craigslist the old cabinet ) ... oh, yeah, and as for what kind of TV, I'd just go on CNET and check out which plasmas are the best.
I'm sure you know, but keep in mind that if your TV is in a bright room, you'll probably be better off with anything but plasma, so use my advice at your own risk

Plasma screens are more fragile than LCD and, unlike LCDs, are suspectible to burn in. And plasmas suck power like mad and don't last as long as LCDs. While plasma render really nice black colors, I think that technology has moved on.

No burn-ins - that's old news. As far as sucking power - I really have no clue lol, but not so much that I've noticed any significant changes in the electric bill since we got it. I have the same 5 year extended plan on both my TVs - plasma and LCD - so I really don't care, but when I was buying the plasma, it had an estimated lamp life of something like 70,000 hours - which wasn't bad at the time. Maybe the technology has moved on, but I have yet to see an equally good picture from an LCD (which is not to say that it doesn't exist - I just haven't been following TVs much lately).
Yep.
Burn in was a problem years ago, but time marches on.
Plasmas do tend to use more electricity, around 100w or so more, given equivalent size, at around the 50-54" range. However, some (ie. Panasonic) have very very efficient panels, and often use less electricity than your typical CCFL backlit LCD.
Plasmas have a half-life (the time it takes to reach half brightness, at which time, they're still plenty bright) of 100,000 hours. If you watch 8 hours a day, 7 days a week, week after week, month after month, it'll take over 34 years to reach 1/2 brightness.
If you're looking for the absolute best, here's an apples to apples comparison. It was a side by side test of professionally ISF calibrated displays, viewed by pros as well as enthusiasts. Info:

V- ya i have a pioneer plasma 1080i in the BR that I bought in 03 for 3500$ love it and it works awesome, altho the brightness isn't what it once was. Pioneer has always stuck by plasma as they're foremost technology in tv's but I guess they just recently announced they're switching to LED. Plasmas as dead as HDDVD
NF- hey thanx for that comparo the samsung looks like it's the clear winner!
Oh I can't sell the cabinet and hang the tv on the wall, it's built into the house
well I'm pulling the trigger today I'm going to go w the 8000 series as opposed to the 8500 series and save myself 700 bucks
thx for the feedback fellas!!
