Is there a limit to how far back I can send email?

Yes. You'll only be able to send email back until April 1, 2004, the day we launched Gmail. If we were to let you send an email from Gmail before Gmail existed, well, that would be like hanging out with your parents before you were born -- crazy talk.

I think this line says it all..........

Yeah, it's definitely a joke - that much is clear. I just wanted to make sure others could see and enjoy it.

How does it work?

Gmail utilizes an "e-flux capacitor" to resolve issues of causality (see Grandfather Paradox).

Gonna have to say April fool joke.

A friend of mine reminded me of Google jokes from previous years. One was a "future search" based on "predictive Internet content".

Don't forget that good old BMW (usually in the UK) has been having some fun on April 1st since before 2000. It'll be interesting to see what they come up with this year...

In the 80's, BMW had a great April Fools Day ad that claimed due to the aerodynamics of their 3 series, you could drive with the rag top open, even during a driving rain storm and not get wet. A classic!
