The Staten Island DA, who is running for Attorney General, has told the press that he intends to charge the suspect with two counts of second degree murder. That's serious jail time if he is convicted. Given that the suspect fled the country immediately after the murders probably dooms his insanity defense. To be criminally insane, you have to prove that at the time you committed the crime, you did not understand the nature and quality of your actions. Immediately fleeing the country demonstrates that the suspect knew that his actions, that is, the murders, were wrong.

Mel, it's such a shock to the system...last year there was a triple killing less than a mile from my house (and this is in Thousand Oaks, CA which is regularly on the safest cities in the USA list)! The father killed his children (who went to school with my girls) with a knife and then killed himself, and there was a palpable difference in EVERYONE here in the neighborhood! I guess it's the shock that this can happen absolutely ANYWHERE! The amazing part comes now, when you see the difference in people in your own community...acting nicer to one another and pulling together! I hope you didn't personally know the victims and that the killer gets what he TRULY deserves!
