Its like people saying guns kill. People kill. They use screw drivers, box cutters, their bare hands... Guns give greater capability, but are not the "reason" people get killed.

Back to 55 MPH... To me, its political non-sense... Its a government money maker.

1) Reaction time

2) physics of 1.5 tons at 55mph versus 80mph (anything greater the 55mph)

The 55mph limit is surfacing again primarily as a gas conservation measure, not as a safety issue. I don't agree with it, and I believe the thinking behind it to be fundamentally flawed, but it's not being touted as a safety issue.

They play it off as both at their discretion. Now they are discussing lowering it yet again. Give me a beak...

I would like to see some data, driving at a constant 65mph vs. constant 55mph.

The gas savings has to be minuscule.

I know one thing environmentalists love these high gas prices, they have always wanted this. They don?t want people to drive combustion cars period.

Agreed. And, I get better gas mileage at 80, than I do at 50...

The 55mph limit does not save lives. There has been considerable data to show that the national speed limit of 55 didn't save lives. The main reason cited has been the speed variance of people driving more than 15mph over the limit. In fact maintaining the speed limit at the 85th percentile will do more to reduce fatalities than artificially low limits. The only time the 55mph limit had any impact was in its first year but that year also saw a reduced number of miles driven.
