have not posted here in a looong time. hope all is well.

i've recently been hooked into road biking, and wanted to check out what you cyclists out there are sporting.
here's a pic of my road bike (switched from mountain biking to road):

question: any tips for beginners like me?
i notice roadies can cruise around 16mph consistently, while i tend to average around 11-12 on a 20mile ride.
does this improve with time, or maybe i'm just pedaling wrong... i tend to use a low gear, with a (somewhat) high cadence.

thanks
(searched before i posted - so hopefully this is not a re-post)

My 2009 Cannondale F7... It's an entry-mid level hard-tail.
I'm just getting back into biking...
