Just announced that BMW Sauber are retaining their driver line up for next year. Kubica was a certainty to stay but I'd expected Heidfeld to be moved on.

This severely limits Alonso's options at this juncture...

you're dead on - I think the only open options are keeping his current position at Renault or making a move to Honda.

Not very good options at that. I don't see Renault improving significantly enough to make a chase for the title next year and same goes for Honda (even if Ross Brawn is at the helm). Looks like another crappy season for Alonso in 2009. That's a shame. Great driver (and I'm not a fan), but lousy car options.

Alonso's contract stipulates that if Renault finish 4th or better in the constructors points, then he is required by his contract to stay there next season. Since the win in Singapore, I think Renault is looking solid for 4th place, which rules out a move to any of the other teams. I think that BMW wasn't willing to wait THAT long for Alonso anyways, and I imagine would like to have at least 1 German driver on their squad (although why they didnt get Seb Vettel and let Nick H. go to Red Bull is beyond me...).
