There are a lot of financial, high-tech and defense jobs in NOVA that pay extremely well. I used to work in McLean, VA a few years ago on contract.

I'm in the middle of a move from Loudoun County VA to Seattle. Loudoun is a GREAT place to live. But the numbers are a little deceiving. Unlike most areas where you have people in various income brackets, Loudoun is pretty much the same across the board. 98k median is actually a drop from a few years ago. There really isn't much in the lower bracket and there are a few much higher but unlike places such as Greenwich CT, you don't see quite as many people in the extremes of the income range either. So most neighbors in many of the Loudoun community make about the same income.

Big employers in the area include all Government and Defense contractors, AOL (What's left of it), Verizon, Sprint (what's left of it), HHMI, VW or Audi, Cisco, and a few other organizations like American Red Cross. Unemployment rate is pretty low there too.
