There are a lot of financial, high-tech and defense jobs in NOVA that pay extremely well. I used to work in McLean, VA a few years ago on contract.

Big employers in the area include all Government and Defense contractors, AOL (What's left of it), Verizon, Sprint (what's left of it), HHMI, VW or Audi, Cisco, and a few other organizations like American Red Cross. Unemployment rate is pretty low there too.
