Cool

Interesting story. :'(

Good news is that it was not a 5er and the driver walked away.

Yeah, except the article says he tried shifting the auto transmission to N but it was "jammed"...

Turn of the ignition, you lose power steering.

Ok on a straight road but no brakes and no steering........

What I cannot understand is how the Tranmission was 'Jammed'.

Sounds more like brain fade to me!

If the driver is semi-skilled, which I would hope is the case, you would understand that you may lose power steering and power brakes -- so what? Prepare for the situation and execute the plan. The most important thing besides the need to push the brake pedal harder and steer harder is to make sure you don't turn the key all the way off (position 0) because you risk locking the steering column.

Again, the authorities on the phone could've helped to prepare the driver is he was clueless...

Rudy is right, after you turn off the ignition before you hit the position which will trigger wheel lock, the steering wheel and brake would still work but you just need to work it a bit harder and it should be enough time to stop the car..... If the driver is semi-skilled.

I would be interested in seeing what came out of the investigation. Sounds like part mechanical/electrical failure and part user error. I find it unlikely that both the throttle would get stuck AND the transmission would be stuck preventing him from shifting into N. Plus there is no reason why the key wouldn't work. Even if he managed to lock the wheel it would quick and easy to unlock it without starting the car back up.

Right, and even if the wheel locked, he could've used the brake and probably stopped the car without needing to steer too much.

I've never tried it and don't think I will but if the throttle is wide open, it's possible that the transmission might be harder to shift to N due to the torque on the drivetrain. I still think a bit of force might have done it but again, I think both the driver and the authorities here weren't using their heads...
