Black Boxes in Cars
#1
So the Highway Administrations wants black boxes in our cars do they. I see this is going to turn out badly for the consumer. If approved how long before big brother says why don't we also track you via your GPS and give it to the insurance companies to detail our driving habits

They've had similar Legistration over here in the NE with tollway smart tags. The proposals surround monitoring the recorded time between toll plazas and when that time is too brief, citations would be issued. Crazy.

Kind of negates having a 500hp V10 under the hood if you can't get out of 2nd gear.
A lot of this type of stuff is just sensationalism on the part of the reporter. They've been talking about this kind of stuff for years.
I would think our cars would already track some of this information already?

Indeed they do. I was in the shop for warranty service and had them investigate a repeated low battery notification I'd been receiving. The tech came back and said the vehicle log reported that the past 20 trips were less than 5-miles average and that I need to drive for longer distances to charge the battery. What's concerning here is the recorded data about each time the vehicle is in operation and the fact that the dealer could download this information. If they know the recent trips; chances are they know each time I disable DTC/DSC, push the throttle to 100% tip-in, or the recent maximum vehicle speeds.

Many cars already have data recorders. One of the ways Toyota was able to deal with some of the (many) bogus unintended acceleration claims was by looking at information from the prototype data recorders.
