That is quite disappointing. I can say from experience that Nikkor lenses are normally not that bad but I haven't used their `kit' lenses since the early 1990's. It would be interesting to see the same shot in f/8 or f/11. The f/5.6 is on the limits for a lens f/3.5-5.6. But clearly it pays to get a faster lens. People often focus too much on the focal length (mm) vs. speed (f/).

That is not a fair comparision - you are comparing a "cheap" nikon kit lense with a USD 300 lense with image stabilizers, which gives you an edge on the aperature... Again - not an apple to apple comparision...

I think the main difference people see in those images is contrast. The Sigma is showing a lot more. I could easily make the Nikon shot look just as contrasty and probably nearly as sharp.
The color looks about the same. The Nikon has some distortion that the Sigma isn't showing, and I see some CA on the streetlight and roof shingles under the street sign on the Nikon sample.
EDIT - What area of the frame were those crops from?
