Thumbs up

A friend of mine just hit a car from behind on a freeway.
Apparently couple cars in front of him hit the brake really hard and he didn't get a chance to fully stop.
He hit a car in front of him, and that car hit another car in front.

Any advice on settling this without going into insurance hassle etc.?

Btw, the damage is minor scratches on bumpers...

I got hit once in the 545i by a guy carelessly backing up to get a parking spot. I honked my horn furiously but the bastard still kept coming. Anyway, after it happened we exchanged info. I took it to a body shop and got the estimate. Faxed him the estimate and he sent a check with a somewhat legalese note stating that by accepting the check I was absolving him of any and all damages.

Only thing he can likely do is fully pay for all damages and hope one of the other parties doesn't report. In almost all cases the driver who rear-ended another is viewed as at fault. Following too closely etc. Not a lawyer or insurance expert, but if this were a relatively minor one-on-one accident, he might get the other party to avoid calling the cops and handle it between themselves. With multiple drivers, not a good chance. I know if I were one of the other parties, I'd want a police report and file a claim with my insurance company just to protect myself.

Edit: Like Vegastrashed reports, a one-on-one accident can sometimes be handled between two parties, a multi-car accident will be much harder to deal with...
