Pittsburgh to Philly. Just did my first real "highway" road trip for the Thanksgiving holiday and wanted to see my true highway-only mileage figures for the first time on my 530xi. I set my cruise between 73-74 mph for about 98% of the trip. My average speed from entry to exit off turnpike was 73.2 mph with avg. of 30.1 mpg. Not too shabby!

I had zero traffic since I drove during the middle of the night. I went for a 100 miles stretch at one point without seeing a single vehicle on my side of the highway.

I was impressed how constant the 30.1 number was when I checked at all intervals along the drive. There are some moutain ranges in PA, but the majority of the drive is mostly flat & straight, and the moutain driving would be expected to cancel itself out going up hard, then coming down easy.

Anyway...still got almost a half tank left! Hope everyone in the states (and those abroad) had a great holiday!

Nice I'll be trekking upstate one week after I get my car to get the break-in process rolling. I'll let you know how the MPG looks on my 535xi.

Hmmm... maybe it's my lead foot but I find it very hard to get that high in my 530i. I'll give it a try this weekend on my trip to CT but I have a feeling I'll hit more traffic than you.

Every long road trip I have taken I have averaged 33 MPG. Probably driving most of the trip around 75 MPH.

I like to see Honda, Toyota and all the other pansy ass hybrid driving, tree hugging wackos match the qualities of my 530i

I was amazed at the 27.1 average in my new 550i. That was a 400 mile trip from Charlotte to West Virginia. Thats with a lot of mountains and 75-80mph speeds! I still don't like paying $3.30 a gallon for premium but I can live with it with this kind of mileage.

Update from first post of mine...My Return-trip mileage:

Just got home from Philly...back to Pittsburgh. This time, with loads of traffic, I still averaged 28.3 mpg, with a higher avg. speed of 75 mph this time. Still pretty impressive I think, considering I was doing 80-82mph the majority of the 300 miles. I did the full 300 miles in just over 4 hours, door to door. It was a record for me.

However, I missed my 19" rims and summer tires on this road trip. I have my OEM's on now for the winter. I didn't realize how much better the summer setup handles and rides (sporty-wise) compared to my OEM Conti's on 17" rims. I felt like I was rolling and swaying all over the place with my 17's! No where near as fun to drive now. Oh well, we only have 5 more months till Spring...at least us folks in the northern hemisphere!

Yeah, I see the Toyota ads touting "with x # of cars with 30mpg highway or better" and laugh. The 530i with a manual transmission has amazing fuel economy. My car gets more than 25mpg for my normal cycle. I get the same 30+ that you're seeing on the long trips.
