My Ride: 2006 BMW M5
You need these things to start:
1) Laptop specially IBM T30 (there are in ebay)
2) Software depend what you need: diagnostic, programming/coding or both. there is a hard drive ready to run with different applications for BMW that sell in ebay for IBM T30 only.
3) Cable OBD INPA (ebay too)
that is it!

Yes, http://ecubb.bmwecu.org/board/ there are plenty info about the software that you need (it is DIS v44) and there are links to download too.
