kinght, i thought it was a no-no to add an amp or mess with the BMW stereo system whatso ever???
i got a JL w6v2 in my trunk. L7 bass is not loud enough for me.
There are other members that are more hardcore than me who replaced and redid their whole system

They said I needed reprogramming and I would also think so for iDrive to display playlists and such.
tony does the quality of the ipod intergration kit sound as good as a regular CD played in the car?

I have no clue. Right now, my iPod is hooked up to an aux input and I'd like to have the full integration so I can see the playlists on the screen and control through iDrive.
I do agree that L7 is a bit flat and the system could use a lot of improvement. I had determined to only spend money on performance and look mods but that might change.

I have heard that orginal CDs sounds much better than mp3 files... Honestly, for my daily commute; iPod integration kit is perfect for me

Interesting. Where would you mount the amp? And what kind of amp would you recommend to drive that thing? Is it possible to control the sub volume through I-Drive? If not, how much trouble would it be to run a line for an adjustable rheostat?

The 12W6v2 has dual 4 ohm voice coils, and is rated at 600W RMS. So basically, you'll need an amp that pumps out about 600W RMS at a 2 ohm load. Personally, I like a lot of bass, so the more power the merrier. But any amp rated between 500W-900W RMS at 2 ohms would be optimal. Here's a few amps I'd recommend:
ALPINE PDX-1.600

JL AUDIO 500/1

KICKER ZX750.1

U.S. AMPS MD.1D

I-Drive will still give you the ability to adjust the bass, treble, eq etc. But, it'll make the adjustment on ALL your speakers (not just the sub). To remotely adjust the sub's volume only, you'll need to have a remote bass control knob mounted in front. Usually it's just mounted below the dash somewhere, and run a wire to the amp. Most mono amps include the wired bass knob.
