Removing the old ones can be done without removing the headlights, but you'll need some long needle nose pliers and some patience. Do a search in the FIY section about installing Angel eyes. There are a few options for you. I didn't remove my headlights on my old xi, and it took 30 minutes on the first due to the learning curve and about 8 minutes on the passenger side.
i see. what's that aluminum canister looking thing in the pictures? is that the light source?

It's a different light source which obviously makes them a white light. Once you see the OEM light you take out, you'll see why they are brighter and better. The old ones cost BMW about 50 cents each!
