What is ACC?
Active Cruise Control is an advanced version of conventional cruise control systems. After setting the chosen speed and pre-set distance, radar measurements allow you to maintain a pre-set distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead in highway driving. As soon as sensors determine you are closing in on a vehicle ahead, the system automatically slows down to retain your pre-set distance. Once the distance has increased back to the chosen limit the system automatically accelerates to return your vehicle to its pre-set speed.

Currently the sensor can't be deactivated, so you allways have to use the ACC and can't use it as a regular CC, but BMW is working on a solution.
ACC is also safety relevant, since the sensor can see better than the humans eye in bad weather conditions like heavy snow, fog, or rain.

LCI= life cycle impulse = facelift. pre LCI refers to the models before the facelifted ones.

On my car the ACC sensor can be deactivated: just push the distance selector for about 5+ seconds in the direction of decreasing distance, and it switches off, leaving a "normal" cruise control.

I didn't try too hard but I don't think this works on my car. Jagohu, are you sure that this works on your car?
Note though, that you need to hold the switch in the upper position for like 4-5 seconds or so and then the "bars" of the ACC disappear and only the selected speed stays on the display.
